Story of The Almanac...

The Almanac made a return to the newscast yesterday and I've already received emails from people saying that they are glad to see it again. I can't promise that it will be in every newscast, but I hope to show it as often as possible. It depends on how active the weather is on each particular day.

Here's the story behind the Almanac... A few years ago, a consultant (that we no longer use) said that the viewers do not care about the Almanac and that it was "old news". We settled on it being in the "bump" of the newscast. That's the area of video as we go to commercial. Well... after a few months, it was removed from there, too.

Yesterday, someone made a comment about how dry it has been this year and I stated that we were actually "above" average for the year, but "below" average for the month. Then I thought... Nobody knows this because we don't show the Almanac anymore. Also, I wanted to show how below average the temperatures were yesterday. So, as you can see... It does not need to be shown everyday, but it does have merit from time to time.

Of course, if management says "kill it"... it's gone again. We have new management, so we'll what happens! :) OH, here's an update... I am now allowed to wear a polo shirt on the weather deck, but it has to be a KAIT polo. That's good! As I've mentioned before, I like giving them a hard time, but our bosses are pretty darn good. They are fair and balanced... (like Fox News?) They also read the blog... lol

Have a good day!
Ryan

EDIT: PS- Just so I am not misunderstood, the old management folks were good too.

Its good to see the Almanac back, hope it gets to stay. Hooray for polo's, too... the suits just did not fit out on the weather deck, I think most viewers like the "laid-back" setting, seeing's thats how most of us are. :)

We have missed the almanac from time to time as well; Rick especially has wondered about it. I think you're right in that it's not always necessary to show it. It's a situational kind of thing.

Good news on the polo shirt front, of course. We felt bad for ya out there on the weather deck with your long sleeves and temps in the '90s! =-O

I've noticed that you've been pointing again at the start of the 10:00 show, too ;)

Prediction: Polo shirts will be
the accepted business attire most
everywhere except the pulpits and courtrooms and perhaps the White House and the Congress within a few decades during the summer months.

p.s. Almanacs do make nice
Christmas Stocking Stuffers!
Lots of useful statistics and
articles and recipes, not to
mention unusual advertisements.

Yeah for the Almanac....I like to compare and see where we stand on the "Global Warming" effect. I like to say that the weather has had ups and downs since the beginning of time. This is especially fun to argue to folks that take the Global Warming effect a little too far.
Yeah for Polo shirts...after all it is a weather deck, out in the elements. You should be able to dress for the weather and occasion. Now if we all sat out on our decks in full suit and tie, then yes, you should follow the norm. Tim is an old home town Rector guy, and I can't think of a single person from Rector that wears a suit and tie out on their deck. Ryan, Start a poll and we'll all vote in your favor. And Yeah that Heidi is making blog appearances again. I enjoy her comments, photos and general point of view..

I'm glad you get to wear polo shirts
now. People don't care, I don't think, and it's appropriate when it's so hot outside and it does have the logo after all! I like the Almanac, too. If your management reads this, I pray they will see people care enough to express their opinions. I'm sure being in management is a thankless job. Thanks for all you do, Ryan.
